Lacquerware originated from the Bagan province of Burma and spread to other parts of East Asia with each country modifying the process and materials to locally available one.
Lacquerware was traditionally used to make vessels known as Shun Ok, offering food as part of Buddhist worship. It is circular in shape, having a spiral top and coloured in red or black.

Handcrafted from woven bamboo, which was then treated with tree sap and several layers of lacquer in the traditional way.
